There are many types of categories
that you will need to familiarize yourself with.
Medication. If you see any orders containing the terms by mouth, sub q, pill, needle, or patch, these are considered medication orders.
Diagnostic/Imaging.
These orders will be for X-ray, CT Scan, Nuclear Med, Radiology, Ultrasound, and MRI.
Diet. There
are many different types of diets, but the most common ones are Regular, Full
Liquid, Clear Liquid, Soft, Mechanical Soft, and Cardiac/Heart Healthy.
Rehab. When a doctor wants to ensure a patient is strong enough to be discharged, they may order Physical or Occupational Therapy.
Nursing. These
are usually orders specifically for the nurse. They are usually something
like HOB (Head of Bed) 30 degrees.
Consultation.
When a doctor puts an order on the
computer (or on paper) for a specialist consult, it falls under this
category.
